At Equine Harmony Connection we use humane science based horsemanship, R+ (positive reinforcement) with clicker. We strive to be a role model promoting R+ for the welfare of the horse. It is our goal for horses to be mentally engaged and willing to participate voluntarily. We give horses freedom of choice without coercion. Our methods follow the ethics of humane hierarchy using the least intrusive, effective principle. We promote self carriage/ collection and individual expression of the horse.
What is R+ Training? – This is reinforcement based and force free training. R+ creates voluntary willingness in the horse without use of negative consequences. Cues are invitations and not commands. Light pressure is used a suggestion to the horse, but never sustained or increased. Horses are given the freedom to choose to participate without coercion. Reinforcements (aka rewards) include scratches, food, or the opportunity for behaviors the horse prefers. A clicker or other distinct marker signal indicate that the horse performed the correct behavior and has earned reinforcement. The R+ method helps fearful/ distrustful horses as well as confident/willful horses. R+ training brings out self expression in the horse and can be used on the ground and in the saddle.
What is Intrinsic motivation?- This is motivation for movement that is self rewarding to the horse. This includes playful movements that most horses reserve for interaction with their own species. Coaxing out these behaviors with a little R+ leads to authentic, genuine, expressive movements. We can shape those movements into functional collection/physical engagement. Intrinsic motivation helps horses feel brave, proud, and physically agile. Horses enjoy showing off these movements and are rewarded by the natural release of brain chemicals. |

What is Trick Training? Trick training can include behaviors that the horse does not engage in on his own every day (things other than walk, trot, canter, and back up). Tricks can include sit down, kneel, bow, fetch, smile, rear, Spanish walk, climbing pedestals, and pushing objects. While horses may engage in some of these behaviors easily, they are challenging for many horses. What are the benefits of Trick Training? Trick training brings enrichment to the horse's life. It improves the communication between horse and handler. It engages the horse, bringing out play drive and individual expression. The horse may use tricks they are taught to solicit attention from humans. Trick training can be used with any age of horse. |
